2008 Fasig-Tipton Winter Mixed UPDATES

If the strength of the Keeneland November Sale knocked you out of the market for young mares, the Fasig-Tipton Winter Mixed in February in Lexington may take care of your needs.  Paramount has a particularly large group of young racing and broodmare prospects entered in the 2008 venue.

Paramount has strong updates to two catalogue pages that should be taken note of:

HIP 241 - APPARRELLA (Aptitude - Pratella) is a half sister to ANGLIANA - recent winner of the Aqueduct Handicap is also MGSP and has five wins with earnings of $286,842.

HIP 172 TENSIA'S TREASURE (Storm Creek - Capote's Halo) is a half sister to JOHNNY EVES - winner of the G1 Malibu at Santa Anita and track record holder at Hollywood Park.

Other broodmare prospects are represented by top commercial sires such as GIANT'S CAUSEWAY, GRAND SLAM, MR. GREELEY, RED RANSOM and SMART STRIKE.  Only two years ago, Paramount consigned and topped the sale with SOMETHINABOUTLAURA.  The filly sold as a racing or broodmare prospect for $375,000 to John Sikura and partners.  The filly has just broken $1,000,000 in earnings and is now a multiple Graded Stake winner proving the February mixed sale certainly produces a few good prospects.

Ballymacoll and Paramount Team Up To Break Record

The air in Lexington could not have been much better during the first week of the Keeneland November Sale.  Not only were the local sports teams winning, but the Breeders' Cup was a resounding success.  To top it all off buyers at Keeneland helped to post new records.

Ballymacoll Stud and Paramount Sales teamed up topple one record, selling Hip 432 - the 2006 GONE WEST - ISLINGTON filly for an incredible $2.4 million.  This eclipsed the previous record for a weanling filly.

"This was just a beautiful filly from one of the best families in the stud book today. It was a once in a lifetime opportunity for the buyer and seller alike" said Pat Costello of Paramount Sales.  "We were pleased to have been given the opportunity to sell such a filly and the results spoke for themselves."

Paramount Among Leading Consignors FT July '06

Continually a perennial leading consignor, Paramount sales has done it again, listed among the top consignors in the Fasig-Tipton 2006 Kentucky July select yearling sale.  Grossing over $1,000,000 in sales, Paramount sold 12 of 15 in the ring and sold the remaining three before leaving the sale grounds for an amazing 100% consigned/sold ratio.

Leading the returns for Paramount was hip #260.  A dark bay colt by MORE THAN READY out of DAMN I'M CLEVER.  "He has to be one of the nicest More Than Ready's I've ever seen," was Pat Costello's comment on the colt who brought a final bid of $200,000 in the ring.  Sold by Long Odds Racing Stable, the colt was purchased by trainer Greg Foley for owner Bakster Farm.  Best of luck to all new owners and thank you to all sellers who consigned with Paramount in the sale.

Comair Flight 5191 Condolences

The tragic story of Comair flight 5191 which unfolded at Bluegrass Airport here in Lexington has proven to be a very far reaching one.  The victims of the crash have not only left behind family who are grieving deeply, but also friends and business colleagues.

Paramount Sales would like to extend condolences to the family and friends of all effected by this disaster.  The staff at Paramount is especially saddened by friends and colleagues that were lost in this disaster.  The losses of George Brunacini and Dan Mallory hit especially close to home.

Of Paramount client George Brunacini, Pat Costello said, "He was a man that sincerely loved his horses...he would drive all the way to Mountaineer some nights just to watch his horses."  Of Dan Mallory Pat said, "Here is a man that worked hard every single day of his life...he will be missed."  Yet another connection to the horse industry is well known Mill Ridge Farm employee Bill Thomason who lost his 25 year old daughter Marcie.  Our sincere condolences go to all the family members.  You are in our thoughts and prayers.

ARKANSAS DERBY Placed,

KENTUCKY DERBY Bound?

After a win in the Lane's End for FLOWER ALLEY and a win in the Sam F. Davis S. for ANDROMEDA'S HERO, Paramount Grads ran 2nd and 3rd respectively in Saturday's Arkansas Derby.

Of FLOWER ALLEY, trainer Todd Pletcher said, "I'm not at all disappointed, but we'll see how he comes out of the race, he's a nice colt." The son of DISTORTED HUMOR placed in the Arkasas Derby in only his fourth career start.

ANDROMEDA'S HERO hung in for the show spot in the Arkansas Derby for trainer Nick Zito.  Saturday was overall a disappointing day for the conditioner who's SUN KING ran third in the Toyota Blue Grass S.  With this last performance, ANDROMEDA'S HERO son of FUSAICHI PEGASUS may have an earnings shortfall to enter the Derby on the first Saturday in May.

One race after watching his Proud Accolade flop as the heavy favorite in the Rushaway, trainer Todd Pletcher's inexperienced Flower Alley surprised his rivals in the $500,000 Lane's End Stakes (gr. II) for 3-year-olds Saturday at muddy Turfway Park.

Ridden by Jorge Chavez for Melnyk Racing Stables Inc., Flower Alley came into the Lane's End off a maiden victory at Gulfstream Park in just his second start. The Kentucky-bred son of Distorted Humor, a $165,000 Keeneland sale in September of 2003, negotiated the 1 1/8-mile event in 1:50 1/5.

"Those maiden races at Gulfstream, at times, are some of the toughest 3-year-old races around," Pletcher said. "He trained well since then, and I trained him with Bandini and Ashado and he finished right there witthose two."

Chavez said Flower Alley was green but, "He can run great, and he looks like a Derby horse."

Sent off at 10-1 odds, Flower Alley challenged 2-1 favorite Spanish Chestnut for the early lead before taking back after a quarter mile in :23 and the half in :46 3/5. Magna Graduate pressured Spanish Chestnut.

Flower Alley, who slipped back to fifth, made his move on the outside of his rivals coming off the turn after being forced to take up briefly when Magna Graduate angled in a bit. He rallied gamely under urging from Chavez in upper stretch and caught a weary Mr Sword inside the sixteenth pole, holding off Wild Desert by a half-length.

Outrun early, Wild Desert advanced along the inside before angling out behind the winner as they came out of the turn. The stewards quickly disallowed an objection from the connections of the runner-up for interference in the upper stretch.

Spanish Chestnut, Gary Stevens aboard, led through six furlongs in 1:11 while racing off the rail. Mr Sword, ridden by Norberto Arroyo, rallied from the back of the pack along the rail and edged to the front on the final turn. Mr Sword had a big lead in the stretch but the early move took its toll and he faded to third.

"Nothing happened, really," said Spanish Chestnut's trainer, Patrick Biancone. "He just didn't stay. He was attacked early, and it was just a little too far for him.  "We are going to go another program with him," Biancone said.

Flower Alley will be pointed to the Arkansas Derby (gr. II) or Toyota Blue Grass (gr. I) April 16, with the Coolmore Lexington (gr. II) a week later at Keeneland also a possibility, Pletcher said.  "We are on a tight schedule now," Pletcher said. "I think the Arkansas Derby or Blue Grass will be next."  Saturday's victory was worth $300,000. Flower Alley, who had previous winnings of $21,660, had earned less than any of his Lane's End rivals.

The chestnut colt began his career with a third-place finish at Calder Dec. 18. He returned two months later with a three-quarter-length win over Wall Street in a one-mile maiden test in 1:37 2/5. Since then, he posted the fastest six-furlong work ever at the Palm Meadows training center, going 1:11 4/5 handily.

Flower Alley paid $22.40, $11.80 and $7.80. Wild Desert returned $8 and $5.60. Mr Sword paid $8 to show. The exacta was worth $179.60.  Magna Graduate was fourth, followed by Andromeda's Hero, Spanish Chestnut, Mayan King, Diamond Isle and Texcess.

Andromeda's Hero Claims Sam F. Davis Stakes

Courtesy Bloodhorse.com ©2005 Blood-Horse, Inc.(from Tampa Bay report)
The Nick Zito-trained Andromeda's Hero flew past 52-1 shot Summer Legacy in the final furlong and powered home to a convincing 2 ½-length victory in Saturday's $100,000 Sam F. Davis Stakes, a 1 1/16-mile test for 3-year-olds at Tampa Bay Downs.

Zito used last year's Davis as a springboard to the Triple Crown for The Cliff's Edge, who ran second.

Andromeda's Hero, a son of Fusaichi Pegasus, was attempting two turns for the first time in the Davis but looked like he wanted to go around again. He finished in a time of 1:46.63.

After breaking from the outside 12th post position, Andromeda's Hero, with Rafael Bejarano in the irons, was bumped soundly as he raced at least five-wide around the clubhouse turn well behind early leader Nicandro, who led the 12-horse field through fractions of :22.90, 46.97 and 1:12.38.

Racing in the rear of the pack up the backstretch, Andromeda's Hero made an athletic move rounding the turn to reach contention.

Fourth but gaining at the eighth pole, Bejarano – Aqueduct's leading rider who flew in for the day – was able to angle out and Andromeda's Hero did the rest as he bolted past Tampa based runner Summer Legacy, who finished second, 6 ½ lengths ahead of Captain Lindsay.

"This is a very nice colt," Bejarano said. "He's only run three times before and looks to be improving."

Owner Robert V. LaPenta, who also owned Davis entry mate G P's Black Knight in partnership with golf hero Gary Player, was in attendance Saturday. He indicated that Andromeda's Hero could return to Tampa for the Tampa Bay Derby (gr. III) on March 19. G P's Black Knight finished ninth.

The entry left the gate as the 9-5 wagering favorite and Andromeda's Hero returned $5.60, $3.60 and $2.80.  Summer Legacy ($26, $10.40) completed a $136.40 exacta. Captain Lindsay was $4.60.

2002 GRAD HAJJI'S HONOR NEW STAKE WINNER

BAY MEADOWS, CA - SEPTEMBER 28, 2003 - In the style of CAME HOME and other recent tales of successful sale buy backs, Fran and Stan Hodge's HONOR AND GLORY colt HAJJI'S HONOR has proven their owners absolutely right by winning the San Mateo S. at Bay Meadows on Sunday.  Mr. and Mrs. Hodge have proven they were far wiser than anyone looking at the bay colt on the sale grounds at the 2002 Fasig-Tipton July Sale.  Even Pat Costello himself has tipped his hat to their wise decision

.

The colt was hammered down in July 2002 with a final bid of $70,000, however the Hodge's saw a brighter future for the colt in taking him home.  Now racing under the Hodge's colors of Hajji Farm, HAJJI'S HONOR has won two races and run second in four starts and has current earnings of just over $55,000.  His effort in the San Mateo S. was a strong one, after being bumped on both sides at the start, he rallied four wide in the stretch to catch RAZEN HAZEN at the wire. Congratulations to Stan and Fran Hodge and their trainer Charles Jenda.  Best of luck in your colt's racing future.

PENNY'S FORTUNE 11TH GRAD TO WIN

FLORENCE, KY - SEPTEMBER 27, 2003 - The regally bred PENNY'S FORTUNE has become the eleventh Paramount Graduate to break her maiden and once again has done it in her first time out.  The daughter of STORM CAT out of LOVLIER LINDA stalked the pace nicely before making a good move to the inside of the field.  She was challenged in the stretch, but prevailed to break her maiden by a length and a half.

Congratulations to owners Howard and Mary Lester, trainer Burk Kessinger and breeder Gaines-Gentry Thoroughbreds and Pacelco S.A.  We hope to see this half sister to OLD TRIESTE in the winners circle again very soon.

PARAMOUNT'S SEPTEMBER CONSIGNMENT STRONG

LEXINGTON, KY - SEPTEMBER 2003 - Once again finding themselves on the list of the top ten consignors at this year's Keeneland September Yearling Sale, Paramount had yet another very successful sale.  The 2003 consignment was led by very strong individuals highlighted by Hip 242, a filly by EL PRADO out of TEDARSHANA (GB) who was purchased by Chiefswood Stables for $650,000.

In addition, hip 417 - a filly by SAINT BALLADO out of LILAC GARDEN - was purchased by Darley for an attractive $575,000 figure and hip 96 - a very good AWESOME AGAIN colt out of the mare FIGHTING JET - was purchased for $500,000 by Fleetwood Management.

CAT BUSTER STALKS TO WIN

SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY - AUGUST 20, 2003 - Trainer Steve Asmussen pulled a cat out of his hat when CAT BUSTER debuted impressively at Saratoga.  The Paramount grad and half brother to two time champion HOUSEBUSTER won his five furlong maiden race in :57.47 seconds.   The son of TALE OF THE CAT stalked about five lengths off the lead into the stretch thereafter clearing the field and besting his rivals by two and three quarter lengths. Congratulations to owners Keith Asmussen and Oceanfront Properties, trainer Steve Asmussen and breeders Gaines-Gentry Thoroughbreds and Pacelco SA.

Jenda.

LA CHAPOSA FILLY IS THE TOPS

LEXINGTON, KY  - JULY 16, 2003 - Pat Costello had confidence in the FUSAICHI PEGASUS filly the moment she stepped out of her stall for her first show on the Fasig-Tipton sale grounds and the filly did not disappoint.  Show after show the filly exuded class to all lookers.  The final bid demonstrated that as this filly from the first crop of FUSAICHI PEGASUS out of LA CHAPOSA brought a final bid of $800,000 by Tim McMurray on behalf of Stan Fulton.

Paramount consigned the filly for New York businessman William Schettine who acquired LA CHAPOSA's 2002 offspring at the Keeneland November breeding stock sale for $410,000.  Paramount would like to congratulate Mr. Schettine, Mr. Fulton and Tim McMurray.  If this filly takes after last year's class of yearlings, she will be seen in the winners circle soon and often.           Anne Eberheart Photo

MAPLE SYRPLE TOUGH IN SCHUYLERVILLE

SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY - JULY 23, 2003 - After her commanding win at Woodbine in June, MAPLE SYRPLE was strong in her first attempt in Graded Stake company.   Breaking from the far outside post position, the daughter of AMERICAN CHANCE took the lead immediately, briefly held it then relinquished it to the eventual winner only to be beaten by a length and a half.

BERRY BERRY KEEPS STREAK ALIVE

PRAIRIE MEADOWS - JULY 6, 2003 - After breaking her maiden in early June, BERRY BERRY has continued the amazing streak put together by 2002 Paramount Sale Graduates.  On Sunday, the dark bay daughter of DEFRERE won The Prairie Gold Lassie at Prairie Meadows to be the fourth graduate to win a stake race in four stake starts.  Breaking from the rail, the filly quickly got the lead and never looked back, taking the five furlong race by a length.  Congratulations to the connections of BERRY BERRY, owner Hunt Stables and trainer Larry Hunt, and to the filly's seller, Drumkenny Farm.

ANTONIUS PIUS TAKES THE RAILWAY

THE CURRAGH, IRELAND - June 29, 2003 - Paramount Consignment topper ANTONIUS PIUS added the Group 2 Railway Stakes to his resume Sunday, as Paramount Sales added a second Group/Graded graduate to its roster.  The $1.5M Keeneland July yearling ran professionally as he overcame a less than optimal post to be ridden "hands and heels" to the wire to win by a half length.  Trainer Aidan O'Brien has included the G1 Phoenix S. as well as the G1National Stakes in his plans for ANTONIUS PIUS' future.  Congratulations to owner Michael Tabor, trainer Aidan O'Brien, purchaser Demi O'Byrne, and breeder Dr. Tony Ryan of Castleton-Lyons.

HECKLE IMPRESSIVE IN TREMONT

BELMONT PARK - JUNE 28, 2003 - HECKLE, the dark steel gray son of Hennessy, impressed once again as he won the Grade 3 Tremont S. at Belmont Park by more than three lengths.  After breaking well, he held the lead at each pole in front of strong contenders such as ADAGE, BEST TO BE KING and KORSAKOFF.  In addition to earning his share of the $100,000 purse and graded stake winning status, HECKLE became Paramount Sales first Graded Stake winner from the 2002 graduate roster.  Dogwood Stable reports HECKLE may start next in the G2 Sanford at Saratoga on July 24th, and later in the G2 Saratoga Special August 13th.  Congratulations to owner Dogwood Stable, trainer Todd Pletcher, and breeder Gaines-Gentry Thoroughbreds.

SWEET AS MAPLE SYRPLE

WOODBINE, CANADA - JUNE 28, 2003 - After being bumped at the start, two-year-old filly MAPLE SYRPLE gave the boys a taste of her own sweet medicine when she gained command of the lead at the three-eighth pole to win the Clarendon S. by three and a half lengths. The daughter of AMERICAN CHANCE is only the second filly to win this race in its history.  She is now heading for the Grade 2 Schuylerville at Saratoga July 23.  MAPLE SYRPLE helped complete a perfect stake winning trifecta for Paramount graduates over the weekend, along with winners ANTONIUS PIUS and HECKLE.  Congratulations to owner Team Valor and trainer Mark Casse.

BERRY BERRY Impressive

PRAIRIE MEADOWS - JUNE 1, 2003 - BERRY BERRY has become the seventh Paramount Graduate from eight starters to step into the winner's circle.  The dark bay filly may be a part of what could be an unprecedented start for any sales consignor.  The daughter DEFRERE tallied one in the win column after coming from off the pace to win by a neck.  Congratulations to the connections of BERRY BERRY, owner Hunt Stables and trainer Larry Hunt, and to the filly's seller, Drumkenny Farm.

After this win Pat Costello said, "I can't believe this streak can continue.  It's unbelievable."  A rumor is now running rampant that Costello has said he will open the bar at McCarthy's for all if Paramount graduates extend the streak to 11 winners for 12 starters.

MAPLE SYRPLE Commanding At Woodbine
