Paramount Tops 2006 Keeneland January Sale

Paramount Sales topped the 2006 January Sale with GIRL WARRIORhip 598, selling for $1,000,000. The G2 winner of the El Encino S was slated to run again just days after the hammer fell. Jerre Paxton of Northwest Farms bought GIRL WARRIOR and intends to send her to the breeding shed.

By most people's amazement, the weather for the 2006 Keeneland January Sale was marked by more high temperatures than low.  And in similar style, the prices for the bloodstock in the ring were far more on the high side than on the low.

Keeneland finished the sale with a new gross sales record for the venue o f $72,329,100.  The previous record had been set in 1988 in a sale that included the dispersal of Nelson Bunker Hunt.

victory and ownerEugene Melnyck a dream win.                            NYRA photo

BELLAMY ROAD, possibly lacking some condition, gave way finishing second while ROMAN RULER stayed for third.

The son of DISTORTED HUMOR out of PRINCESS OLIVIA by LYCIUS was bred by George Brunacini and sold by Paramount Sales as a weanling in the 2002 Keeneland November Breeding Stock Sale for $50,000.  Eugene Melnyck subsequently purchased FLOWER ALLEY as a yearling at the 2003 Keeneland September Yearling Sale.  According to Todd Pletcher, the chestnut is being aimed for the 2005 Breeders' Cup Classic-G1 October 29 via the Jockey Club Gold Cup-G1 on October 1, both at Belmont Park.

In his usual come from behind kick, ANDROMEDA'S HERO circled the field five lanes wide to win the race by a length and three quarters going away.  Congratulations to owner Robert LaPenta and trainer Nick Zito.

One of the most exciting race meets in the country produced one of the most exciting races in the country this weekend when SWEET TALKER won the G1 Queen Elizabeth Challenge Cup at Keeneland.   Winning the race by the smallest of          Janet Worne Photo

noses, SWEET TALKER became the second Grade 1 winner for Paramount along with FLOWER ALLEY who won the Travers S. late this summer.

In a gutsy ride by top jock Rafael Bejarano, SWEET TALKER was eased toward the back of the pack in the early going, although never far behind the lead.  Asked to join the leaders in the stretch, the dark bay dug in gamely to win shocking the betting public at odds of nearly 19 to 1.

Congratulations to owners Eliah and Lisa Kahn, trainer Helen Pitts and breeder Brereton Jones.

FLOWER ALLEY Budding Hero

Paramount Sales graduates continue to shine with the latest effort coming from FLOWER ALLEY who won the G2 Jim Dandy at Saratoga.  The son of DISTORTED HUMOR and PRINCESS OLIVIA (by Lycius) was the odds on favorite in a short field of five which included additional Paramount grad ANDROMEDA'S HERO who himself was second in the G1 Belmont Stakes two months ago.

FLOWER ALLEY may now prep for the G1 Travers Stakes later this August.  Possible foes include the outstanding ROMAN RULER, recently victorious in the G1 Haskell Invitational over Derby fourth place finisher SUN KING.                                                                                          NYRA/Adam Coglianese Photo

Congratulations to owner Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Melnyck, trainer Todd Pletcher, and breeder George Brunacini/Bona Terra Farm.  Click here to read the chart.

SURF'S Up In Southern California

Paramount Grad SURF CAT remained in his winning ways with an impressive win in the July 9 Swaps Breeders' Cup G3 at Hollywood Park.  SURF CAT was the bettor's second choice to Kentucky Derby runner DON'T GET MAD who finished fifth.

Running just off the pace for most of the race, SURF CAT angled in into the stretch and ran on to clear the field by five lengths running the mile and an eighth in 1:48.

In an allowance effort in this summer, SURF CAT has earned himself a 114 Beyer figure.  This is the co-second highest Beyer awarded a three-year-old this year.

Congratulations to owners Aase Headley and Marsha Naify,  trainer Bruce Headley, breeders William Taylor Nicholls and Gainesway Farm, as well as all other connections.

ANDROMEDA'S HERO Solid Second in Belmont

Paramount Sales' graduate ANDROMEDA'S HERO became the second G1 and classic performer from the Paramount sold alumni.  Running behind the ultra-impressive AFLEET ALEX, the son of FUSIACHI PEGASUS passed the field including Kentucky Derby winner GIACOMO to finish a respectable second in the Belmont Stakes.

Ridden by Rafael Bejarano, the bay raced four wide the entire mile and half oval.  And while he may not have beaten the probable three-year-old champion AFLEET ALEX, ANDROMEDA'S HERO certainly did his part to earn a $200,000 payday.  Congratulations to owner Robert LaPenta, breeder Barnett Enterprises, and trainer Nick Zito.

Paramount Grad SURF CAT became the latest grad to step up to the Graded Stake level with an ultra game effort to run second in the Affirmed H-G3 at Hollywood Park June 18.  Racing off the pace early, the son of SIR CAT took the far turn four wide to finish just to the outside of the eventual winner INDIAN OCEAN.

In the dust both three-year-olds left former Santa Anita Derby winner BUZZARD'S BAY who finished last in the field of four.  Beaten only a neck, SURF CAT may be pointed for the Swaps Breeders' Cup S. July 9th for which the Affirmed serves as a prep.

Congratulations to owners Aase Headley and Marsha Naify,  trainer Bruce Headley and all other connections.

Coin Silver Shines in Sloppy Lexington Stakes COIN SILVER Third Grad in KY DERBY

Coin Silver carries Javier Castellano to convincing win in sloppy Coolmore Lexington.
Anne M. Eberhardt

A sloppy track at Keeneland Saturday brought out the best in Peachtree Stable's surprising Coin Silver, who romped to victory in the $325,000 Coolmore Lexington Stake (gr. III) in his stakes debut.

Trainer Todd Pletcher said afterward that he plans to add the late arriving 3-year-old son of Anees-Beyond a Doubt (Conquistador Cielo) to his Kentucky Derby (gr. I) roster, which includes Bandini, who won the Blue Grass Stakes (gr. I) at Keeneland a week ago.

"Anytime a horse comes around this time of year, you've got to love it," Pletcher said of Coin Silver. "If he comes out of it well, we'll see if he can bounce back in two weeks."

The victory came at the expense of 3-5 favorite Rockport Harbor, who fought the track conditions while racing wide throughout, tossing in the towel in the stretch to finish sixth.  Coin Silver, sent off at 13-1, broke outward for Javier Castellano and hit the starting gate, bumping with Storm Surge as Actxecutive and Going Wild dueled on the front end. Coin Silver was able to save ground for most of the trip, moving into contention coming out of the far turn while splitting rivals. He quickly took over from the new leader, Storm Surge, in upper stretch and pulled away to a 3 1/2-length win while under a hand ride from Castellano.

"He didn't break too well and I just kept him behind the speed," said Castellano, who is the regular rider for probable Derby favorite Bellamy Road. "It was a very fast pace, so I just waited to make my run. He's a pretty good horse. I don't think a mile and a quarter will be too much for him." ...  Coin Silver had won just once previously, breaking his maiden two starts back at Gulfstream Park March 5. A month later, he returned to run third as the 4-5 choice in a first-level allowance race, beaten by three lengths. Overall, Coin Silver has a 2-1-1 record in five starts. His winner's share of $201,500 is enough to qualify the darby bay colt for the Kentucky Derby...

Coin Silver paid $28.80, $10, and $5.60. Sort It Out returned $6.20 and $4.20 while rounding out a $127.40 exacta. Storm Surge's show was $4.20.

He was a "live longshot" for ESPN and their coverage of the G3 Coolmore Lexington Stake on Saturday, April 23.  First in that race, the Budweiser Longshot COIN SILVER became the THIRD Paramount sale graduate to be a likely runner in the 131st Kentucky Derby on May 7,

2005.  In a year of multiples, COIN SILVER joins other Paramount Grads FLOWER ALLEY who are two of Todd Pletcher's three entries and ANDROMEDA'S HERO who is one of Nick Zito's five to be placed in the Derby entry box.

Congratulations and best of luck to all connections of all horses.  May we suggest betting the "Paramount Trifecta".
