KEENELAND SEPTEMBER DEADLINE DRAWS NEAR

While pressure is building, there is still time to enter yearlings for Keeneland's September yearling sale.  The deadline for entry (as well as scratches) is May 3.   Paramount Sales continues to be the new force in the auction ring selling two sale topping individuals in 2003.

If you are still questioning which yearlings to enter for Keeneland and which may suit other sales, Pat Costello can be of some assistance.  Pat will be visiting farms both in and outside of Kentucky to inspect yearlings right up until the entry deadline. For states Pat is scheduled to visit or his local schedule, please contact the Paramount office at (859) 296-6455.

TRIPLE CROWN RACES ARE HERE

When asking most people these past weeks who they liked for the Kentucky Derby, the answer has been nothing but an educated guess as to who may even be in the field.  With such uncertainty looming over the contenders, the only certainty is that there will be a full field of twenty this year.  Perhaps the best arguments the weeks before the big race can be made for MASTER DAVID, TAPIT, SMARTY JONES, THE CLIFF'S EDGE, QUINTON'S GOLDRUSH and ROCK HARD TEN who all had very good prep races coming up to the Derby.

The fields will no doubt be whittled down for the Preakness and the Belmont Stakes.  But until then, the handicapping has only begun.  And as in 2003, we are proud to bring you Pat's choices for the Kentucky Derby.  Please consider the source when taking this information into account on the way to the betting windows...when asked if he had his picks for the Derby Pat promptly replied "Yeah, about twenty of 'em"!

Pat's Picks

Castledale (IRE) When you're Irish, you like everything Irish.
Lion Heart "I've got to pick this horse to win simply because Gabriel Duignan says he won't!"
Master David Didn't he finish in the same spot in the Wood as the 2003 Derby winner?
Tapit This horse rounds out my "Top 4". That way only 16 horses can beat me.

IT'S A LITTLE KNOWN FACT. . .

Did you know??

With one hundred thirty years of history in the books, the Kentucky Derby has many interesting facts that many people may not be aware of.  For example:

 Did you know

- ELWOOD was the first horse owned and bred by a woman that won the Derby?

1904 Elwood - owned by Mrs. Laska Durnell, bred by Mrs. J.B. Prather

- May 3, 1952 was the first time the Kentucky Derby was broadcast on TV

HILL GAIL won the race which aired on CBS.

- In 1896 The Kentucky Derby was shortened to 1 1/4 miles from its original 1 1/2

     mile distance.

- In 1938 the infield winner's circle is first used.  The tunnel to the infield is built

and spectators were allowed to view the race from there for a 50 cent

     admission.

- HOOP JR. was the winner of the Kentucky Derby in 1945 - a year when racing

was actually banned. The ban was lifted on May 8th and the Derby was run on

     June 9.

- $32,000 funded the original construction of Churchill Downs in 1874.

- 1895 was the first Derby run under the twin spires.  It was won by HALMA.

- 1924 "My Old Kentucky Home" was first associated with the Kentucky Derby.

It was sung at the Derby's 50th anniversary and replaced "The Star Spangled

Banner" as the lead into the race.

A portion of the information above was found on the Kentucky Derby's official website www.kentuckyderby.com.  The site has an amazing amount of information posted including video replays of all the Derby contenders' prep races.  We would highly recommend everyone visit the site at least once before the big race.

GRADUATE SPOTLIGHT

Paramount Sales has been represented once again by a Graded Stake winner.  Paramount's first sale topper SPANISH EMPIRE (2000 c. by Pleasant Colony - La Paz) won the Grade 3 Fifth Season Stakes at Oaklawn Park on April 7th.  The dark bay half brother to hot young sire FOREST CAMP defeated tough handicapper CRAFTY SHAW running a mile and a sixteenth on the dirt in 1:42 2/5.  Congratulations to Jubilee Stable, Martin Cherry  and Twin Creeks Farm.

We'd like to wish the best of luck to all all owners and breeders of Paramount graduates in the 2004 racing season.  We hope everyone finds the winners circle this season.
